'Aretha's Lament' - a found poem (Villanelle)

Everybody said he was a cheat.
Her own mother said it.
‘Oh No! Not my baby.’

Aretha wouldn’t believe them.
He wasn’t like the others, but
Everybody said he was a cheat.

She started calmly enough but
By the chorus she was screaming
‘Oh No! Not my baby.’

The strings, the horn riff, the percussion
All told her she was wrong.
Everybody said he was a cheat.

The backing vocals wailed
But she hung on tight.
‘Oh No. Not my baby.’

She begins to wonder.
Could she be wrong about him?
Everybody said he was a cheat.
'Oh No. Not my baby.’
